The Ancient Aliens series on The History channel has made some radical claims. But none so much more practically radical yet simple than 'Aliens excavated the tops of mountains to be runway strips'.
Lets just get right to it. A mountain with a flat top is called a "Mesa".
They are formed by weathering and erosion of horizontally layered rocks that have been uplifted by tectonic activity.
Different types of rocks resist weathering and erosion differently. Weaker types of rocks erode away more and stronger types resist more and erode away less. The flat part of the mountain you see above is a strong layer, and all the layers above that one have eroded away, leaving a table top look to it. It isn't perfectly flat although it looks like it from afar.
In some places on Earth ancient people have gone to the tops of these mountains and scratched designs into the dirt that are so large that they can be seen from the sky. Often these people did this for religious reasons. In most places, there are no designs at all.

There are even Mesas, along with all the other formations on other planets, such as Mars.

So, no Aliens traveling across the Universe to build primitive runways to launch their highly advanced technology into the air just to go probe you in the ass.
